A brave team of polo novices attended the 2nd annual North East Canoe Polo Tournament in Banff on Saturday 3rd March 2012. The team consisted of Kirsty, Josh, Mark, Paul, Maria, Tom and Chris.
We played a total of five games. We were on first game of the tounament against a young well organised Donside team who could shoot and score from halfway! We held them to 1-0 until near the end were we lost a second goal.
Next up was Aberdeen Kayak Club fielding a six and a half year old! This was a close game with the AKC goal rattling from the ball hitting it so much. We eventually got through and by the end of the game it was 2-0 to Aboyne.
Our last game in the group stages was against Nesky. They beat us 2-0 but it could of be a lot more if their main striker had been more on target with his shots!
So into the playoff stages we played against Moray. This was a very tense and close faught match. It was 2-2 with just a few minutes to play when we got another goal to win the match 3-2 and proceed to the 5th/6th place playoff.
This final match of the tournment saw us have a rematch with AKC. This time it was much closer. The breakthrough for us came when Chris was fouled in the act of shooting under the goals - PENALTY! All players from AKC had to go back to halfway which left Chris four metres out from an open goal. When the referees whistle went he calmy slotted it home to confirm Aboyne as 5th place in the tournament. The final followed after our last game were the much more experienced Nesky beat Donside 3-0.
Well done to everyone for being so enthusiatic and getting stuck in. Hopefully this will lead to more polo in the club and we'll aim for an improvement on 5th next year!
