Not the River Spey!

Not the River Spey!

The club programme dictated that 22.4.2012 was to be a trip out of the River Dee watershed to the Spey.  However with the large volume of wet stuff falling from the sky the decision was to head to the River Avon(pronounced arn).

I know what your thinking.  Thats the river that is always on the programme but never gets paddled.  Well today was the day!  We reached the River Avon get in just past the Queens view outside Tomintoul.  The sun had come out and the river was at a nice medium level.

Thie upper section start was a new(undiscovered) bit of river to both JK and all other 9 paddlers.  The river consisted of many grade 2 and 3 sections with lots of bends and blind corners to keep things interesting.

The first fish of the day was Miriam Smart (Pauls daughter).  Caught out by a visicious eddy line.  The joint second and last fishies of the paddle were the Giffs - Ben and James.  Those nasty trees seem to attract James!!!

The main event of the river according to the guidebook was Distillery Falls - a supposed grade 5 rapid.  All the group portaged apart from Chris who scraped down it.

All in all a lovely day going paddling!
